Cela lui permet d'\u00eatre introduit dans les meilleurs cercles de l'intelligentsia, et de se livrer \u00e0 une fr\u00e9n\u00e9sie de conqu\u00eates f\u00e9minines et de festins de drogue (il prise au moins une douzaine de lignes de coca\u00efne tout au long de la repr\u00e9sentation). Cependant, dans ce qui peut \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un acte d'apaisement, les personnages restants conservent une majeure partie de leurs caract\u00e9ristiques d'origine.<\/p><p>Le concept global est diff\u00e9rent, innovant, et m\u00eame s\u00e9duisant. Mais, dans sa tentative d'injecter du sang neuf dans une cr\u00e9ation de plus de 200 ans, la r\u00e9alisatrice nous entra\u00eene dans la confusion, les sc\u00e8nes de taquets inutiles, et m\u00eame l'ennui. S\u00e9ville, la ville color\u00e9e et vibrante d'Andalousie, se transforme en un gigantesque mausol\u00e9e aux murs de b\u00e9ton noir et gris, largement inspir\u00e9 des bandes dessin\u00e9es d'Enki Bilal. L'ensemble est si oppressant que les chanteurs semblent r\u00e9duits \u00e0 de petits nains se perdant dans l\u2019immensit\u00e9.<\/p><p>Chaque solo, duo, trio, quatuor et quintette sont bafou\u00e9s individuellement, transform\u00e9s en une s\u00e9rie de situations grotesques telle le Commendatore confin\u00e9 dans un fauteuil roulant qui ne lui laisse aucune chance \u00e9vidente de survie face \u00e0 un jeune Don Giovanni plein de fougue. Passons sur Donna Anna donnant une fellation \u00e0 Leporello pendant qu'il \u00e9tale les conqu\u00eates de son ma\u00eetre. Ou le m\u00eame Leporello r\u00e9chauffant une bo\u00eete de haricots sur une bougie avant de priser un paquet entier de coca\u00efne. Et, dans un dernier pis-aller, la statue ambulante du Commendatore remplac\u00e9e par un ensemble g\u00e9ant de projecteurs, probablement inspir\u00e9s de certaines \u0153uvres de Vasarely.<\/p><p>Nous rions. Nous rions parce que nous nous ennuyons. Nous nous ennuyons, car l'\u00e9motion est inexistante pendant toute la repr\u00e9sentation. Alors que, comme \u00e0 son habitude, le jeu des acteurs est \u00e9blouissant (une des signatures de l'Op\u00e9ra de Sydney), la distribution artistique, au lieu d'\u00eatre \u00e9poustouflante, est visiblement essouffl\u00e9e apr\u00e8s 10 repr\u00e9sentations. Andrew Schroeder (Don Giovanni) se perd dans sa voix, \u00e0 condition d'arriver \u00e0 l'entendre. Catherine Carby (Donna Elvira) a utilis\u00e9 tellement d'\u00e9nergie dans ses \u0153uvres d\u2019\u00ab insufflation \u00bb qu'elle doit acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer sa voix pour \u00e9viter de se retrouver \u00e0 bout de souffle, laissant l'orchestre en plein d\u00e9sarroi. Les autres interpr\u00e8tes sont \u00e0 peine moyens ; ils chantent bien, juste bien.<\/p><p>Au milieu du chaos, Kate Ladner (Donna Anna) demeure la seule \u00e0 prendre les devants avec ses tonalit\u00e9s vibrantes. Mais, malgr\u00e9 sa voix colorature talentueuse, elle parvient n\u00e9anmoins \u00e0 ruiner son solo le plus important d\u2019un couac.<\/p><p>Ce n'est pas une distribution mozartienne. Ces jeunes chanteurs, bien que plein de potentiel, ne sont pas adapt\u00e9s \u00e0 cette performance. Apr\u00e8s trois heures, nous atteignons l'overdose (de coca\u00efne) et parvenons \u00e0 un point o\u00f9 nous voulons juste que leur calvaire (et le n\u00f4tre) se termine rapidement. Ce qui se produit finalement dans une \u00e9norme rafale de projecteurs puissants, nous aveuglant pendant plusieurs minutes. Il est temps pour le public de partir.
